Design and Materials

The design of the e51 is very normal but it is the build quality and the materials used that make it very special. The handset is a candy bar. The materials used on the phone are plastic and metal. The phone that I am trialing is black in color. The battery cover and the outer rim on the front side of the phone. The phone is a fingerprint magnet because of the metal used and this is the reason why they provide a cleaning cloth.

Build Quality

The build quality on the phone is absolutely brilliant. The phone feels very solid as if it is made of one single piece. There are no creaks and the phone feels good to hold as the back is metal. The phone will not slip from the hand as there are engravings on the battery cover which provide grip

Keys

The keys on the phone feel good to use because they provide proper feedback. They appear to be made by a mix of plastic and rubber. The size if the keys are even suitable for people with big hands and fingers. The keys too do not creak when pressed
(people who have used the n95 may have noticed the number keys creaking after some weeks of usage).the d-pad is a five directional one and has a chrome outer ring. It makes navigation quite easy.

Call Quality

The call quality as in all e-series phones which are aimed for business customers(people who talk a lot over the phone)is absolutely brilliant. The earpiece provides very good volume without any disturbance while talking. But if you use the loudspeaker at high volumes, the sound gets distorted. But the earpiece even at max volume provides crystal clear sound quality.

Connectivity

The phone provides the user with all the latest means of connectivity thus allowing to access internet and data at any place and time. Surfing the net is quite fast however viewing pages can be quite uncomfortable due to the small screen.

Screen

The screen in the e51 is very good. It is very bright and has decent legibility under sunlight. Viewing pictures etc is not a problem. But it may not be suitable for watching movies etc due to its small size. The screen is protected by a plastic cover over the screen.

Camera

The camera in the e51 has a resolution of 2 megapixels. But the camera lacks autofocus and flash. Due to this taking photos in the dark and close-ups can be difficult. You can get a decent picture under good conditions. The video quality is just ok. It’s nothing compared to the phones with 30fps though.

Music and Video

The music player on the e51 is just basic and nothing like the ones found on the n-series.the sound quality is not even close to the ones in n81 etc. The video is good in quality but uncomfortable to watch on its small screen.

UI

The UI as in any S60 phone is brilliant. The phone is S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 1. The menus etc are customizable with themes, wallpapers, screensavers etc. Even a new person who is new to the S60 scene can easily understand and use the phone.

Memory

The built-in memory of the phone is 138MB.The memory can be expanded using micro-SD cards of up to 8GB capacity. Though the memory is hot swap, we have to remove the battery cover to insert the card, but there is an advantage as we don’t have to take the battery out.

Conclusion

The E51 is a wonderful device by Nokia. It does everything a business man would need a phone to do. The call quality, usability, build quality etc. The only drawbacks are the areas where a business man thinks are secondary such as the camera, small screen etc. to round up, this is another good phone from Nokia.
